Opera in Santa Fe

  August 11 - 19, 2010   Length: 8 days
This nine-day tour begins in Albuquerque where you spend your first two nights enjoying the rich culture and heritage rooted in centuries of history. You spend the next six nights in Santa Fe, located at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains where the high desert meets the ponderosa pine. Santa Fe is unique in its blending of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo cultures. It is also a city renowned for its museums and fascinating architecture.

The Santa Fe Opera House is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and offers a panoramic view of sunsets and stars through open sides. The acoustics are incomparable and an English translation of the opera can be seen at a glance on a screen in front of your seat.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the city is its architecture. Santa Fe has one of the strictest architectural style codes in the country, designed to maintain the historical integrity of the city. High-rises are forbidden and no building is more than five stories high. Visitors are intrigued by the curved, natural lines of the thick adobe walls, the use of hand-hewn wood in ceilings, the many earth-tone hues of stucco. According to an old custom window frames and doors are painted turquoise to keep evil spirits out.

Santa Fe is also a city of museums and boasts the only museum dedicated to an American woman artist of international stature. The world’s most significant museum of Spanish Colonial art opened its doors in 2002. Both a museum with rotating displays of cutting edge contemporary art and another filled with contemporary Native American art have received international attention. And Santa Fe has the largest collection of folk art in the world.
